News, Views and Careers for All of Higher Education

Registration and user settings

You don’t have to register to read the stories, search for jobs, or submit comments on Inside Higher Ed. Registration is required to take advantage of other free services. Find out about registering and managing your account with Inside Higher Ed.

Is the site free to use?

It’s free. The only thing we charge for is posting a job to the site. That means you can read the news and opinion pieces, join the blogs, post your comments, search the jobs, enter a confidential profile of your credentials in our searchable database, apply for jobs online, receive our weekly e-mail update, even give us a piece of your mind — all without paying a dime. Register now.

Well, if the site is free, why should I register?

We won’t charge you, but we do need to know who you are to provide some of our services — just your e-mail address and a password gets you our weekly e-mail update. We ask for (but don’t require) your name, the institution you’re affiliated with, and your title or department. Why? First, we can do a better job of covering the issues that matter to you if we have some sense of who you are. Second, we can let recruiters know that their postings are reaching the right people — you. Finally, we require some contact information to use our job services. By registering, you can save job searches, use the Confidential Profile database, and save or post jobs. We’ll be very careful with the information you choose to share with us — read our Privacy Statement for details. Register now.

What is your e-mail update service?

Inside Higher Ed’s free daily e-mail is a quick summary of what’s new on the site, along with links to the full stories. Sign up and you’ll get the top news stories and your daily dose of provocative opinion delivered right to your inbox each weekday. You can opt for our weekly summary if you prefer.

How do I cancel the e-mail update?

Just click the unsubscribe link in the e-mail itself and follow the instructions, or click on MY ACCOUNT (there’s a link in the left hand menu on each page) to change e-mail preferences (just change YES to NO next to “receive e-mail update").

How can I make sure I receive my Inside Higher Ed e-mail as I wish to?

The advice below will help you configure your Outlook e-mail client to best receive Inside Higher Ed’s daily news update e-mail. For guidance on other e-mail clients, please contact your tech support department or the help files of your e-mail provider.

White-listing or tagging Inside Higher Ed as a “safe sender”

To make sure that Inside Higher Ed e-mails are not filtered into your JUNK, BULK, or SPAM folder, please add insidehighered.com to your list of trusted senders. Click on the “Actions” menu in your top tool bar, then open the “Junk Mail” menu and click the “Add sender to safe senders list” option. That’s all there is to it!

Our e-mails can also be blocked by your institution’s firewall. You may want to consider sending the following e-mail to your IT department to be sure insidehighered.com is placed in your firewall’s “white list” of approved e-mail senders.

“I would like to receive e-mails from Inside Higher Ed that may be blocked by our SPAM filters. The SPAM filters may catch these e-mails as they deliver topical news items every day that may contain words on our SPAM hit list. Inside Higher Ed never sends SPAM or unsolicited e-mails of any kind. Can you please add the domain “insidehighered.com” to our white list of approved senders?”

Receiving Inside Higher Ed’s HTML e-mail in text form

Inside Higher Ed’s daily news update e-mail is being sent in HTML format. You can set your e-mail client to receive all e-mail in plain text for and continue to receive the full content of the e-mail without the HTML formatting or images. To choose the text-only option, open the “tools” menu in your top tool bar. Choose the “options” menu item and then choose “e-mail options.” Make sure the option “read all standard mail in plain text” is checked.

For additional assistance, please contact your tech support department.
